Gizzi and Killian claim for Spicer "a broad and lasting effect on a diverse range of writers nationally and internationally." You expect that sort of boilerplate to advertise a book such as this, and they may well be right, but my guess is that Spicer's effect is not so easy to recognize. He would have loathed the thought of poets writing Jack Spicer poems. Those who might write like him are in for a withering squawk from their Martians. To receive Spicer's effect — no doubt tonic for some — poets must abjure "the big lie of the personal" in favor of the poems their antennae pick up from the airwaves.
