OPENING

DINNER WITH FRIENDS | The Independent Drama Society presents Donald Margulies's 2000 Pulitzer winner, in which the title dinner finds Beth announcing to her married friends Gabe and Karen that she's divorcing Tom, who's been unfaithful. This is distressing to Gabe and Karen, since they're the ones who fixed up Tom and Beth, and it's distressing to Tom when he returns from his business trip, since he doesn't feel Beth represented his side of the story. Gabe and Karen wind up in the middle, and eventually they start to question their own marriage. | Factory Theatre, 791 Tremont St, Boston | independentdrama@gmail.com | June 19-21 | Curtain 8 pm Fri-Sat | 3 pm Sun | $15; $10 students

HELLO DOLLY! | For their 41st consecutive summer season, Reagle Players are offering "A Salute to Jerry Herman," and it kicks off with Broadway's Rachel York — Lucille Ball in the CBS bio-pic, and a Drama Desk Award winner for Victor Victoria opposite Julie Andrews — as widowed matchmaker Dolly Gallagher Levi, whose intentions toward the available Horace Vandergelder soon transcend the professional. We're promised a full orchestra, "Broadway" sets and costumes, Gower Champion (most of you aren't old enough to remember Marge and Gower) staging, and Broadway vet Jamie Ross as Horace. | Robinson Theatre, 617 Lexington St, Waltham | 781.891.5600 | June 18-27 | Curtain 3 pm [June 18] or 7:30 pm [June 25] Thurs | 7:30 pm Fri | 2 pm [June 20] + 7:30 pm Sat | 2 pm Sun | $32-$54

MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING | Without Shakespeare's romantic comedy about the bickering Beatrice and Benedick, would we have Sonny and Cher, or Sam and Diane? Whatever, theater companies love it, and this month it makes its way to the Cape. | Cotuit Center for the Arts, 4404 Falmouth Rd, Cotuit | 508.428.0669 | June 25–July 19 | Curtain 8 pm Thurs-Sat [no July 4] | 4 pm Sun | $20; $18 seniors; $10 students

OUTWARD BOUND | Beau Jest Moving Theatre celebrates its 25th anniversary with a staged reading of British playwright Sutton's Vane 1923 comedy about seven passengers on an ocean liner who gather in the lounge and realize they have no idea how they got there or where they're going. They're dead, of course, but where they're going is still to be determined. Current and former company members taking part include Larry Coen, Davis Robinson, Lisa Tucker, Elyse Garfinkel, and Bates Wilder. | Charlestown Working Theater, 442 Bunker Hill St, Boston | 866.811.4111 | June 18-20 | Curtain 7:30 pm Thurs-Sat | $15; $10 students

A REVELS SUMMERSDAY | Revels' solstice celebration moves to Watertown this year for two performances at the Center's Charles Mosesian Theater. The afternoon show will be graced by Katrina and Neryssa Nields; other performers will include A Celtic Sojourn host Brian O'Donovan, Hankus Netsky and Linda Chase from Another Realm, and eight stepdancers from the O'Shea-Chaplin Academy of Irish dance. Revels' own David Coffin will lead a sing-along of "The Wild Mountain Thyme," after which the celebration will continue outdoors, where there'll be a Maypole and morris and sword dancing, and, of course, the Padstow 'Obby 'Oss. | Arsenal Center for the Arts, 321 Arsenal St, Watertown |www.ArsenalArts.org| June 20 | Curtain 3 + 7 pm Sat | $25; $15 children under 12

  •   EMMANUEL MUSIC'S B-MINOR MASS; LEXINGTON SYMPHONY'S DEBUSSY AND HOLST  |  October 03, 2011
Johann Sebastian Bach wasn't the first composer to recycle previous material, but he might have been the first to put together his own greatest-hits album.
  •   JORDI SAVALL AND THE BOSTON EARLY MUSIC FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA  |  June 17, 2011
"The Celtic Viol" — the title of the Boston Early Music Festival concert Catalan gambist Jordi Savall gave yesterday evening at Jordan Hall — looks like an oxymoron, since Irish and Scottish music is almost by definition traditional and popular and the viol is associated with "serious" early classical music.
  •   REVIEW: JIG  |  June 16, 2011
Sue Bourne's documentary about Irish stepdancing in general and the 2010 Irish Dance World Championships in particular treads a formulaic path.
  •   THE BOSTON EARLY MUSIC FESTIVAL EXHIBITION  |  June 17, 2011
What with the operas and the big-name visitors and the demonstrations and mini-classes and workshops and symposia and society meetings, to say nothing of the Early Music America Conference and Young Performers Festival, it would be easy to overlook the Boston Early Music Festival's Exhibition.
  •   LARISSA PONOMARENKO BOWS OUT  |  May 26, 2011
The bad news — really bad news — this past week is that principal dancer Larissa Ponomarenko is retiring after 18 years with Boston Ballet. (She will, however, be staying on as a ballet master.)
