As zaftig Amazon Sofia, who won't be beaten down even when she is, Tony-nominated Felicia P. Fields has the role Winfrey played in the film, so no surprise that she steals most of the scenes into which her large, colorful personage sashays. The treatment of the character may be unsubtle, but the timing is dead-on, the mezzo formidable. And toward the end, when the Job-like Celie is on the brink of her reward and a little comic relief is in order, Sofia's suggestive duet with husband Harpo (Brandon Victor Dixon), "Any Little Thing," adds a touch of Fats Waller to a show that already packs some heft.
