The Funn(k)y Drummer

Rich v. Lewis

JERRY LEWIS
Speaking of Buddy Rich, head over to YouTube to see "the world's greatest drummer" in a drum-off against France's favorite funnyman. In this clip, Lewis saddles up in his gargantuan customized kit — complete with tribal toms, a massive gong, and even a bank of chimes. He warms up with some light paradiddles and ratamacues (or whatever they're called . . . no drummer am I), and Rich follows suit. Then some quick staccato rolls, again matched stroke for stroke. And onward the competition ratchets up, with Lewis holding his own — er, to a certain point, at least — against the jazz great.
