To everything there is a season

This year's second cookbook offering from Down East is The Eat Local Cookbook: Seasonal Recipes from a Maine Farm, by Lisa Turner, of Laughing Stock Farm in Freeport. According to our sources at Longfellow Books, this one is a hot seller, and we're not surprised. Turner's recipes - many of them created for Community Supported Agriculture customers who didn't know what to do with this overly abundant vegetable or that one - are simple, locally focused crowd-pleasers. Her gardening and vegetable-storage tips, too, are welcome and in keeping with the book's do-it-yourself aesthetic. Broken down by season and then by course (each season showcases apps, sides, salads, entrées, and desserts), the offerings range from radish sandwiches (on white bread, with lots of butter) to Thai curry with summer veggies to calzones with scallions, kale, or broccoli raab, utilizing whatever your fields, farmers' market, or root cellar provides.
