Maybe these guys should go to Burning Man and pass out their wares: “Nat and I like to say that we’re not hippies, we’re granolas. And I think that when you’re talking about a granola, you could be talking about somebody who grew up in the ’60s and protested the Vietnam war and was in the hippie movement.” He looks me straight in the eye: “but then you could also be talking about someone who drives a Prius — are they granolas? Yeah I think they kind of are.” I nod in agreement — relieved I qualify — “The kids now in their 20s who are out there protesting the Iraq war, or advocating for the environment — are they granolas? I think they are.” Aaron seems to be in his element now, contemplating this stuff: “I tend to think it’s somebody who’s very conscious . . . they’re making conscious decisions, which I think, often does come back to what you’re eating.”
Now I’m really nodding, as he sums up the Grandy guy ethic: “I’m not in business just to be in business. I could go sell insurance or software, or something with a little higher margin, but I just kinda feel like it’s a good way for us to have an impact.”
