More than ESPN and burgers

It’s where Box Seats, the sports bar up in Woonsocket, used to be. That’s how Wetherlaine’s, which the place has been called for the last few months, will have to get used to being described, as irregular customers get used to the change. (We asked a cop on patrol for directions, and he didn’t even correct us about the new name.) Wandering in the wilds of northern Rhode Island, we started getting hungry, and Johnnie recalled a good meal there a few years ago.
 
The new owners run another Wetherlaine’s in Attleboro, thus the name change. But it’s not so much a new restaurant as an amplification of the previous one. When we discovered the original place, we were charmed by its friendly atmosphere, its piled portions, and its amiable pub tradition of letting customers going over to ladle out free soup.
 
In the current transformation, the old menu of bar food and a few entrées is pretty much kept while being copiously expanded. There are steaks as well as burgers, and those burgers have been beefed up to 10-ounce size. Beers on tap have multiplied to 20. Thin-crust pizzas are new. There are more sandwiches and many salads, from steak Caesar to a chipotle salad topped with homemade crab cakes. A Tuesday twofer, with choices from baked tilapia to meatloaf, is $18.99, including soup or salad, and dessert and coffee.
 
But before checking out the new menu, I scoped out the new look while getting some soup (potato-leek, assertively peppery, good). There were five TV screens visible from where we sat, all tuned to Sunday night football, but whereas there used to be hundreds of sports photos, magazine covers, big-game clippings and other memorabilia, there are now just token displays.
 
An apparent attempt has been made to keep a rah-rah atmosphere, but also to yuppify the decor to match the new menu. While the room we sat in sported a couple of Red Sox jerseys, they were across from a movie poster and scenes of Paris bistros. Uh, are we talking Manny Ramirez or Audrey Hepburn? The place badly needs a serious decor decision, perhaps mediated by a vocational counselor, to decide its identity.
 
My suggestion? In its previous incarnation, burn marks on the floor from cigarettes, not to mention a still smoky carpet, were part of the place’s sweaty charm; in a steak au poivre context, it’s merely tacky.
 
For starters, in addition to such choices as bruschetta ($5.75) and a spinach and artichoke dip ($7.95), there are bar snacks available individually or in three combinations. We picked what is officially the “combo platter” ($6.95), opting for chicken tenders, rather than the fried version, and they were mildly hot and juicy. The marinara sauce for the deep-fried provolone wedges was delicious, and while the baked potato skins looked tired from their reheating, they were heaped with bacon and cheddar and tasted fine.
 
Of the 20 main course attractions on the menu, a dozen are under $14, including stuffed shrimp and a chicken and artichoke scampi. Three items included sirloin tips, so I chose the tips and chicken over pasta ($11.95) and was pleased with my decision, except for the penne (linguine also was a choice) being very overcooked. The bigger of the pieces of beef were at least pink in the middle, as requested. There was plenty of grilled chicken and roasted red peppers, plus mushrooms and spinach in a cream sauce that was delicate with the garlic and imaginative by being salted with soy sauce. Shredded cheese and herbs sprinkled around the wide-rim bowl made for a nice presentation, a slice of garlic bread perched on the edge.
 
Johnnie’s choice, baked cod ($12.95), is more simply described: the butter-baked fish fresh, topped with seasoned cracker crumbs and it was served with her choice of grilled zucchini, still with some bite, and a baked potato that unfortunately was not warm at its center.
 
Laminated cards on each table show pictures of a half-dozen desserts, not made in-house, from carrot cake to a deep-fried, tortilla-wrapped banana caramel cheesecake, all $5 or $6. We had the chocolate baby bundt, which was a nicely moist chocolate cake with both chocolate and caramel sauces. It was a pleasant enough ending. Audrey Hepburn might even have liked it.

As a frequent visitor to the "other" Wetherlaine's, I am most certain that once the owners have finished transforming the atmosphere at this location, Wetherlaine's, Woonsocket will be as amazingly wonderful as its namesake! The owners are exceptionally adept at running a restaurant, and I can't wait to see the final product when their hard work is completed!

My name is Jack Wetherbee, you recently dined at my restaurant Wetherlaine's, formerly Box seats, Woonsocket. I appreciate the write up regarding our newest location. I regret the shortcomings with both your potato and pasta, and would like to respond to your comment about our potato skins. They are baked on premise and hand cut the only re-heating that takes place is when they are deep fried then coated with cheese and bacon then baked All of our food is fresh and prepared daily. All of our Steaks, filets, seafood and poultry (except for squid and shrimp) are received and hand cut daily. Our bread, and produce are also delivered and prepared daily. We have built a very high reputation in the Attleboro, Seekonk, pawtucket and New Bedford areas because of the above mentioned standards. I guaranty you will not find any other restaurants in our restaurant segment with the quality fresh products that we use. And prepare them to our standards. We felt the first area that needed immediate attention was the kitchen. Although out of customer view, we felt it was very important for both sanitary reasons and a greater work environment for our kitchen staff. When we took over,the kitchen had 3 microwaves and no oven! How does a restaurant operate without an oven. You guessed it, micro-waved stuffed haddock, you get the idea. We have redesigned the kitchen and put in a new cooking line with all new equipment. We have trained our cooks to broil, saute, bake, prepare, and work sanitary. I am now proud to give anyone, including the board of health a tour of our operation. We do not prepare our foods in a dirty fly infested apartment room or on top of dish machines.We will stand by our employees, our food and the quality of our service. Admittidely the interior has much to be desired, as that is a work in progress.The framed Red Sox shirt that you mentioned is a registered team jersey that was signed by Jason Varetick at a benefit auction put on by Adalias Thomas of the New England Patriots We had it professionally framed for Wetherlaine's. Admittedly it is not a cover of Sports Illustrated. What worked for Box Seats does not work for Wetherlaine's Pub. We have ordered all new booths, tables and bar stools. These are all being made custom for us. They will be in place in early December. Next will be the remodeling of our ladies room(I thank you from the bottom of my heart for not mentioning the condition of it.) Next will be the replacement of the carpets. Then the lighting, next a re-design of the bar(efficiency in mind).Last but not least, the exterior upgrade. All this takes money and lots of it!! We are e not millionaires. My wife Tiffany and I took over a bar that served food called Jerimars in Attleboro a little more then ten years ago. We have seen sales increases in every one of those years. we are now up almost 300% since we took over. We have not advertised since year one. It has been all word of mouth!Tiffany and I bought Freestones City Grill in New Bedford, Ma., almost 2 years ago. Freestones has been a 23 year landmark in the National park that is somewhat up-scale from our other locations. At the close of this year we will be up 23 to 25% at that location. Guess what? no advertising there either. Just word of mouth. We have done this with the same food and beverage product that we use in Wetherlaine's. Box seats had a loyal following, although for the past few years it had been dwindling down. Tiffany and I feel that our improved menu with a far superior food product at a very fair price(remember, you get what you pay for!). larger draught beer selection. Revamped wine list(Wine used to be served out of a keg), large margarita and martini menu. New and improved dessert menu, ,a clean updated interior. And last but not least, the best and most dedicated restaurant&;employees in the city. We will be the talk of the City in the near future We are not targeting our selves to the "Yuppie" crowd. But to the middle class crowd that appreciates good food, beverage, service and atmosphere at a fair price. Please visit our other locations, talk to our employees, our customers and vendors to get a feel of who we are and what we are trying to accomplish for the city of Woonsocket. Please feel free to call me, I would love to meet you and give you a tour of our restaurant and our products. We did appreciate your review, we understand the mistakes we made and your critisism of our decor. But believe me it will have a whole new look in the future. As I said it is a work in progress. JW

Dear Bill, Ever go to Wetherlaines in Attleboro? Have you ever consumed food that immediately puts you in a better mood the instant you have enjoyed a bite? I defy you to find a better more delicious Mango Margarita at least this side of the Mississippi. Laines chokes ever grace your palete?(FYI: they are scallops with bacon nestled in an artichoke heart drizzled with a garlicky lemon wine sauce proven to create convulsions of spontaneous joy at its consumption). And, dear dear Bill, may i suggest if you are having a bad day, to not only order the margarita above mentioned, but try my favorite, steak sandwich with sauteed onions and jack cheese in there toasted garlic bread (with yes, Bill, more cheese on top)and a horseradish mayo that completes what i feel is my number one "mood enhancer" meal. You would think the way i feel about the quality and deliciousness of Jack and Tiffies food that i am 200 pounds, but i assure you i am not, but if it was on behalf of the overconsumption of their food, that might be small conselation. I am however, a loyal patron and friend of theirs, and would gladly sit on rotted wood crates to enjoy their food and wonderful staff. However, this is not necessary since they are in the process of revamping the entire restaraunt and as i am sure you are well aware that Rome was not built in a day. You may not be aware that although my house may also be considered imperfect I can assure you that I also know and serve great food. I think that it is only fair that you should perhaps give them a little more time to accomplish their decor objectives before you revisit, and perhaps ask yourself how long it took you to make YOUR apartment/condo/house to look the way you wanted???? (and did your friends really care??)

Having grown up in the area (Woonsocket & Cumberland), I have gone to Box Seats for many years. I had become disappointed over the past few years at how the quality of the food had become junk. Free soup was not a reason to go there and my wife & I wanted more than a burger and beer. Maybe it is because I am a little wiser and wanted better food. I had stopped going there until a friend told me that it was under new management and the food was much better. So I thought I would check it out for myself and was very surprised that not only was the food a lot lot better but so was the atmosphere. As a Woonsocket resident I am sure we can all agree to what Box Seats had become. I am happy to see a new ownership come in and care enough about our city to make it a better place with better food. The only reason I wanted to write was because the Owner seem to care enough to respond to your article and I felt a needed to support what he has been doing and to tell people that things have changed for the better at Box Seats (Now Wetherlaines). So for those people who have abandoned Box Seats over the years...Come back and give it a try. I think you will be as pleasantly surprised as I was. Bill, please take the owner up on his offer and report back. Go Pats!!!

You buy a business or a house or anything.... You think this is great! It is mine. Well it is not really yours. Unless there are big bucks coming in, you can not do exactly what you want to do for quite a while. You get into the place and you want to paint the walls and change the floors. Maybe even get new furniture or televisions. Well that all come with time and money. How do you expect perfection in a couple short months??!! You have to give the owners some credit. They are basically working from scratch. What was that place? With all the trouble that was there it was not a place that you would want to take your family. Everything takes time! Even a job. You work your way up from the bottom and that is what Wetherlaines is trying to accomplish. Personally I think they are starting off pretty good!!!!!!! And as far as the free soup that everyone has an opinion about.... It is discusting!! How many people are touching the ladle, or coughing around it? Most of them Im sure did not wash there hands before getting there "free soup". GROSS!!!!!

I have frequented the Attleboro Wetherlaine's many times and have never been disappointed. The food, portions and atmosphere are terrific. May I suggest you plan to revisit once the new owners are complete with the make-over.

Everything you need to know about Wetherlaine's can be taken in by checking out the standing-room-only bar in Attleboro some night. The place has, what can only be described as a vibe. They have created what every casual dining chain up and down the bi-ways of suburbia strives to emulate, that authentic local dining experience, the neighborhood pub. Don't get me started on the cheeseburger club; which will be prepared to your liking. Mine happens to be cooked medium rare, with marble rye and Swiss cheese, hold the fries and add the homemade onion rings! Pair that up with a your favorite draft and we are talking home run. Citizens of Woonsocket and surrounding environs, consider yourself blessed to have the Wetherlaine's team in your town.

Well Bill:\ I'm absolutely mystified as to how you can compare the New Weatherlaine's to the old Box Seats. There is no comparison. When I first went to the Old Box Seats prior to the new olders purchasing the property, I went in for a simple lunch. What I received was a "nuked" hamburger (well done), greasey fries that made my gut roll, and then an offer to try a desert. Well, probably a fluke. So, I went back several weeks later, and found the identical situation. So, that was the end of Box Seats for me. I not sure if your criticism of Weatherlaine's is a criticism of the fine people of Woonsocket or decor or both. I can't believe that you would liken the residents of that city to cigarette stomping sweaty pigs who now miss the good ole Box Seats. And who cares about Kathryn Hepburn. Her stomach and intestinal track is just like ours. Free soup...golley...get a grip man. If the newspaper doesn't pay you enough, then get a raise. If you need free soup, I sure you can fine it in Providence. Anyways, my wife and I have on two occasions gone back and both of us had wonderful meals. The service was with a smile, the management was fantastic, and the food which we ate allowed us to enjoy the rest of the evening without having to run to the toilet (like ole Box Seats). Get over it. Don't be jealous when a new generation comes in and makes it work. They are taken a business chance BECAUSE UNFAIR CRITISM ALWAYS SHOW UP. But, then again, that's why guys like you collect the weekly check and wouldn't stand a chance on your own. Don't be jealous. Be positive. WEatherlaines in both Attleboro and Woonsocket are great. Good luck to the Wetherbees.

The Wetherlaine's have a great pride in their restaurants. Their food is phenomenal. Like when ordering new furniture for a home, we are at the mercy of the furniture company & their delivery schedules....give them time, it will be well worth it!

Wetherlaines is a cornerstone of restaurant goers in the Attleboro area. Not a seat to be had most nights. Especially the bar. An awesome place. Didn't even know there was one in Woonsocket. Can't wait to go. I guess rich should review cars and not restaurants

wow - yup the food is great - i checked out attleboro - great tips - cooked perfectly to order - waitress was great - terrific time - just wish we could have lost the drama with the 40 and getting old wife - she is a piece of work - mainic to say the least - she was the only downer of the night
