Somali equality

By BRIAN DUFF  |  April 22, 2009

Its fun to see the profoundly different personalities of the brothers, which can affect your meal profoundly. The older brother knows the dishes well and describes them vividly. He recommended the masala chicken. But when we ordered it from the younger, he scoffed and said he had never tried it but thought it "looked dull." Get the biryani, he said, it's more interesting, and I will get them to make it with masala chicken. We agreed, but apparently the sisters told him no. He didn't know it wasn't possible, since "I never go in the kitchen." Instead what we got was a perfectly fine and nicely spiced chicken biryani, but not what we would have ordered. We didn't mind much. At Barava egalitarianism makes things unpredictable, but its pleasures are undeniable.
