Keep in mind that the beaches along Cape Cod’s National Seashore, which occasionally feel like a circus (even without carnival games), can become chaotic. The sunrises and sunsets here may be unrivaled, but if it’s serenity you’re after, it’s better to enjoy the Outer Cape seaside during the week — and never during the days around the Fourth of July weekend.
Overcrowding is also a problem in Newport, but it’s possible — after a morning of ogling mansions, or clambering along the rocky Cliff Walk — to find smaller coastal havens, such as Gooseberry and Navy Beaches, or East Beach, in Charlestown. In these semi-secret coves, you can watch the surf pound the shore until night falls.
In Maine, locals recommend Scarborough’s Ferry Beach, where the water turns turquoise on sunny days, and supposedly warms up faster than anywhere else along the coast. Shhhh.
Things are heating up here in New England, and we’re in for a sultry, sexy, sweltering summer. Luckily, the New England coast is laced with seashores calling your name.
