A million little pieces

By CHRISTOPHER GRAY  |  March 14, 2007

Iraq in Fragments lacks a strong narrative arc, as a whole and even within its three parts. Its message is intentionally ambiguous. Longley’s subjects contradict each other, espousing propaganda and bemoaning imperialism while seeking equal amounts of power and riches themselves. Others simply hope for an end or an escape. Accusations go unrebutted and questions remain unanswered. They all add up to lay a foundation suggesting that the only thing all Iraqis seek is progress. Iraq in Fragments is a snapshot of a country at an interminable crossroads.

A million little pieces
All I needed to read was the first paragraph of this review. Any child (or shall I say, human...yes, human) forced to endure hardship and ridicule while dreaming of living in a better life...deserves a purple heart and a place of highest honor, living with peace and joy and love. The world needs more understanding and harmony..all around.

  •   YE + HARU BANGS + BATSHELTER  |  November 04, 2009
Who was the least idiosyncratic band at Bubba’s last Thursday? Maybe the (not breaking up, but going on academic hiatus) duo Haru Bangs, who were the only act in plainclothes, but who also unfurled dynamic, punishingly loud fits of drum and effects-mauled guitar which will either strike you as utterly alienating or as novel, dizzying bits of well-composed chaos?
  •   ROLLING STONED  |  November 04, 2009
Every new gambit is just another log on the roaring bonfire of Jonathan Lethem's eighth novel.
