The other side of the mountain

By ASHLEY RIGAZIO  |  December 10, 2007

This is the one to beat: search online for WOK RACING, a type of bobsledding that originated as a joke bet on the German celebrity-challenge television game show Wetten, dass. . . ? (Wanna Bet?). Basically, you squeeze your ass into a large, heavy Chinese wok, put ladles on your feet, and send yourself careening down a bobsled course at remarkable speed. This could also “work” on a ski slope. Though the race was invented as a way to humiliate the C-listers of German entertainment, videos from the 2007 championship reveal that wok racing has become less of a spectacle over the years and more of an intense, serious sport with commentators and lots of yelling, making now a better time than any to bring the sport to the States.

For the inventive and the brave, there are plenty of options out there — some as easy as going into your kitchen and trying to fit into your pans. Who knows? Before long, you just might find yourself being the Shaun White of wok racing.
