Digging in

By DEIRDRE FULTON  |  April 28, 2008

IAN CHENEY One of two main characters in King Corn, Cheney spent more than two years living in Iowa while working on the film. He’ll answer questions after a film screening on Friday night. The Massachusetts native, along with his King Corn partner-in-crime Curt Ellis, recently finished The Greening of Southie, a documentary about a green-certified building in South Boston — and the construction workers who helped erect it.

BARBARA DAMROSCH AND ELIOT COLEMAN This organic power couple, who run the year-round Four Seasons Farm, are often called the “rock stars” of gardening and small-scale sustainable agriculture. Damrosch is a prolific writer — in addition to her weekly gardening column in The Washington Post, she is the author of several famous green-thumb tomes, including The Garden Primer (Workman Publishing, 1988). Coleman, too, is a horticulturist extraordinaire, whose books (The New Organic Grower, Four-Season Harvest) are must-reads in the organic-farming circuit.

ROGER DOIRON The Scarborough resident founded and runs Kitchen Gardeners International, a non-profit aimed at “relocalizing the food supply” — by growing at least some food in our own backyards.

CRAIG LAPINE The founder and director of Cultivating Community, a Portland-based organization that runs urban gardens in the city, and tries to get kids interested in where their food comes from.
