Beyond the polls

By SARA FAITH ALTERMAN  |  October 31, 2008

Live returns aren't usually a laughing matter (except for the abysmally funny 2000 election). This year, BOSTON NEWS NET, the city's only live weekly satirical news show, presents Political Party, five hours of comedy and live election coverage, from 8 pm until last call.

ImprovBoston, 40 Prospect Street, Cambridge, 617. 576.1253, bostonnewsnet.com

HARD ROCK THE VOTE with the Boston Phoenix, Stuff@night, and WFNX, at, where else, the Hard Rock Café. Join us for an evening of food, drink, prizes, and, of course, election coverage, broadcast on big-screen TVs. Must RSVP in advance to attend.

Visit thePhoenix.com/electionparty for details.

Eat and drink — family-style — with fellow Democrats, while catching election coverage at “BARACK THE VOTE,” part of Persephone's weekly “Tuesday Night Supper Club.” This week’s $40 prix-fixe meal ($60 with wines) features pachyderm-inspired items, including “Seared Elephant Trunk Scallops” and “White Elephant Cupcakes.” A DJ will take the stage at 10 pm. Seatings are scheduled for 6 and 8:30 pm.

Persephone, 283 Summer Street, Boston, 617.423.2257, achilles-project.com.

We have a chub for Andy Barker, P.I. (just released out on DVD), because we have a major chub for the show’s star, Andy Richter. Richter plays an accountant who is mistaken for a detective-for-hire and decides to just roll with it.
  •   REVIEW: SPREAD  |  August 19, 2009
If only there were some way to watch a con-artist houseboy give his cougar sugar mama a squirming reach-around, charm the pants off a candy-necklace string of countless empty-eyed Hollywood stick figures, lose his heart to an untouchable social chameleon, and, in the process, find himself .
  •   NORTHERN EXPOSURE  |  July 29, 2009
While New York is grittier, Los Angeles juicier, and Boston is wicked smahter, for some odd reason it is Montreal that, for two weeks every summer, becomes the epicenter of the comedy universe.

  •   BEAT THE TWEET  |  July 22, 2009
Warm weather is supposed to be accessorized by lackaday, by a breezy sensibility best enjoyed with a frosty tall boy in one hand, the sloppy product of a back-yard barbecue in the other. Instead, I find myself struggling to balance my beer between my knees and my overstocked paper plate on my thigh as I furiously poke at my BlackBerry.
