Ready to roll

By CLEA SIMON  |  May 6, 2009

Even with all the prep in the world, spring might also be time to think about new head gear. "Every two or three years, you should replace your helmet," says Wissell. "The foam inside becomes very brittle. It's only good for one crash and it does have a limited lifespan."

Yes, that sounds like a lot of little things. But really, in terms of a machine that you rely on, such spring bicycle maintenance is pretty minimal. Which, after all, is the point.

"Part of the appeal of having a bike is that it shouldn't be a big pain in the neck to take care of," says Wissell. "Often it isn't a question of doing a full tune-up. It's just getting those few things addressed and going on your way."

Clea Simon is living proof that you can forget how to ride a bike. But she has re-learned and can be reached at cleasimon.com.

To call a 560-page novel “spare” sounds ridiculous. But though Wolf Hall is both lengthy and dense, this book — essentially a character study of the 16th-century statesman Thomas Cromwell — is also as close to bare-bones writing as one can imagine, a stark and unsentimental triumph.
