There’s plenty of nostalgia in this animated baseball fantasy based on Howard Jonas’s boyhood yarn. For one thing, it’s directed by the late Christopher Reeve, along with Colin Brady and Dan Pierre. For another, it’s set in the Depression era of Babe Ruth and the Yankees and the Cincinnati Tigers of the Negro League. Yankee Irving (Jake T. Austin) can’t hit a lick in sandlot games, but when the Babe’s bat gets stolen and the boy’s dad, a Yankees clubhouse attendant, is fired, young Irving sets off on a cross-country journey to retrieve the bat and revive the Yankees’ faltering hopes of beating the Cubs in the World Series. (They actually swept the Cubbies in ’32.) Hero gets away with animating Babe’s bat, Darlin’ (Whoopi Goldberg), and a baseball named Screwy (Rob Reiner), but the history-warping climax and the cheesy contemporary sing-songs nearly break the spell.On the Web
