Steven Cantor and Matthew Galkin followed the Pixies — Charles “Black Francis” Thompson, Kim Deal, Joey Santiago, and David Lovering — on their when-pigs-fly reunion tour in 2004, and their perceptive documentary is a must-see for fans. “Do you think it’s gonna be like this every night?” asks Deal’s incredulous sister, Kelly, after the band play their first warm-up show to a rapturous, sold-out crowd — something the Pixies sure weren’t used to in their heyday. Indeed, things have changed a lot since 1992, when Thompson dissolved the group. He and Deal have very different solo careers (the latter’s success dependent on her new-found sobriety); valium-addicted Lovering and new-family-man Santiago are both scraping by. And though they all seem excited to be on stage together again, the differences sometimes seem unbridgeable. Toward the end of the movie, Thompson hints at a new record. It hasn’t happened yet. Maybe this was enough.
