VIDEO: Watch the trailer for
The Ex
.
The premise here is flawed. Chip, an asshole in a wheelchair (cleverly played by Jason Bateman), is supposed to be the ex-boyfriend of Sofia (Amanda Peet), an ambitious lawyer turned full-time mom. Workplace pandemonium breaks out when Sofia’s hapless husband, Tom (Zach Braff), becomes Chip’s new underling at a flaky new-age ad agency. One big problem: Chip isn’t
really
“the Ex,” as the title so baldly declares, and neither does he ever get close to bedding his former cheerleading partner. The oversight hints at a split between creative and marketing. Director Jesse Peretz (former bassist for Boston alt-rock legends the Lemonheads) is interested in sophisticated laughs about the pratfalls of yuppiedom; the producers want a Farrelly brothers knockoff. The result is a pleasing and forgettable muddle with a surplus of disappointing cameos. Why they didn’t stick with the original title,
Fast Track
, is a mystery.

Review: Please Give
Well, I’ve got my first candidate for Best Supporting Actress for 2010: Ann Morgan Guilbert, who plays Andra, the 90-year-old obstacle to the happiness of a disparate group of Manhattanites who range from the utterly selfish to the overly selfless.
Review: Couples Retreat
This movie has the power to make any date feel as endless and soul-sucking as the lifetime’s worth of defective, hateful marriages that doom the film’s protagonists.
The Break-up
Those of us accustomed to Boston-scale apartments will at once appreciate what The Break-Up has to offer: the condo.
Critical lapses
Am I the only film critic with this vainglorious dream?
Smokin' Aces
Perhaps Joe Carnahan pitched his follow-up to 2002’s Narc as It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World by way of Quentin Tarantino, Guy Ritchie, and bad wigs. Watch the trailer for Smokin' Aces (QuickTime)
Pregnant pause
Jason Reitman’s film makes the most of a few great ideas.
The Heartbreak Kid
The only honor the remake is likely to vie for is “most athletic sex scene” at the MTV Movie Awards. That, or “most audible queef.”
Gag reel
The Devil's in the details in Fox's new animated series, Sit Down, Shut Up , but I wish he'd gotten more involved in the main elements as well — like stories.
Local color
Michael Corrente will be presented with the Creative Vision Award for his influential and ambitious work next week at the 10th Annual Rhode Island International Film Festival.
October lite
We expected the vampires, the werewolves, the zombies, and the homicidal maniacs. Same thing with the android doubles, the alien abductors, the sexually abused pregnant teenager, the Apocalypse, and the post-Apocalypse. But kids' movies?
