A call to action

DARFUR NOW: Theodore Braun’s documentary takes a positive, hopeful approach.

Theodore Braun’s probing documentary about the genocide crisis in Darfur takes a hopeful approach, promoting activism by extolling the efforts of six individuals at differing locations along the spectrum. Actor Don Cheadle gets fellow Ocean’s star George Clooney into the mix; the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in the Hague and a female rebel soldier also fight for justice in the region. Braun neatly pieces together the origins of the grim situation, from the 1989 military coup to the alleged employment of the Janjaweed (nomadic Arab militias) by the government to drive farmers from their land as the Sudanese officials, pockets full from supplying China with 60 percent of its oil, sit by and watch. Cheadle’s call to action inspires, but the travails of World Food Program coordinator Pablo Recalde, who runs supply convoys through battle zones, is the ultimate embodiment of sacrifice.
