A week after Paul Walker’s beloved sled dogs began their heartwarming fight for survival in Disney’s
Eight Below
, it’s Walker who needs saving — his new film is for the dogs. He plays Joey Gazelle (would I make this up?), a low-level Garden State Mafioso charged with stashing a gun that was used to kill a “dirty cop.” This being Jersey, it’s only natural that next-door neighbor Anzor (Karel Roden) would be a John Wayne–worshipping, crystal-meth-addicted member of the Russian Mob. While playing with Joey’s young son, Anzor’s stepson Oleg (Cameron Bright) swipes the cop-killing “gat,” shoots his abusive stepfather, and runs. Joey must overcome pimps, ho’s, and hockey pucks to retrieve the gun before it’s too late. By the time the pederast murderers appear, it’s clear that writer/director Wayne Kramer’s
The Cooler
was a fluke — and there’s nothing cool about that.

Think Carlton Fisk and Thurman Munson.

Tyler Perry secured two likable leads for his new film, and they make Daddy’s Little Girls more enjoyable than it has any right to be.

If there’s no limit to your love of fat jokes, this is the movie for you. Watch the trailer for Norbit (QuickTime)

Existential rubble
Sweet Disaster may not topple any of our convictions about how the world works. But that’s only because it reminds us how we stumble over our existential rubble every day.
Hot stuff
Like someone picking at an unhealed sore, Paula Vogel has always returned to the socio-sexual plight of women in her plays.
Streetball spectacle

Bring coffee, because director Dean Wright's dramatization of the 3-year-long Cristero War (1926-9) seems to last longer than the Mexican conflict itself.

Filled with Indian (and British) clichés, it is nonetheless a pleasant diversion that doesn't involve special effects or 3D glasses.
REVIEW: BLUE LIKE JAZZ
| April 12, 2012
A faith-based film directed by Christian recording artist Steve Taylor, adapted by Taylor and Donald Miller from the latter's 2003 memoir, this micro-budgeted indie tries to appeal to everyone by not offending anyone . . . except those who like movies.
