Primary concerns

By PETER KEOUGH  |  December 28, 2007

Feeling nostalgic for the good old days when political matters were settled in the streets with nightsticks and tear gas? Take a trip down memory lane with CHICAGO 10 (February 28), Brett Morgen’s documentary about the ill-fated 1968 Democratic National Convention. Or maybe you’d like to go even further back to the old axe-and-block days; Justin Chadwick’s THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL (February 28) adapts Philippa Gregory’s novel about the rivalry of the two Boleyn sisters over Henry VIII. Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson, and Eric Bana star.

MARCH
By March the nominations will be a done deal, so maybe it will be a month to reflect on the past.

As in 10,000 B.C. (March 12), Roland Emmerich’s extravaganza about a prehistoric clan searching for a kidnapped woman, encountering saber-toothed tigers and lost civilizations along the way.

Or with HORTON HEARS A WHO! (March 14), Jimmy Hayward and Steve Martino’s animated adaptation of the Dr. Seuss story about an elephant (George Bush?) who believes in a microscopic community (Iraqis who welcome the American occupation?) With the voices of Jim Carrey and Steve Carrell.

Taking us back to the present is Kimberly Peirce’s STOP LOSS (March 28), in which an Iraq war hero (Ryan Phillippe) returns home, tries to adjust, but then is called up again. Judging from the failure of previous Iraq movies, though, most people will probably be going to Craig Mazin’s SUPERHERO! (March 28), a spoof of the title genre starring Brent Spiner and, of course, Leslie Nielsen.

  •   REVIEW: UP IN THE AIR  |  December 01, 2009
No director pulls off the bait-and-switch as craftily as Jason Reitman. He gets you thinking that you're watching a hip, caustic comedy subverting the status quo, but by the end, he's vindicated all the platitudes he seemed to scorn.
  •   REVIEW: Z (1969)  |  December 01, 2009
John F. Kennedy wasn't the only political leader murdered in 1963. On May 22 of that year, Gregoris Lambrakis, a left-leaning, pacifist member of the Greek parliament and an aspiring presidential candidate seeking to replace the reigning right-wing government, was assaulted after a peace rally in Thessaloniki. He died five days later.

John Hillcoat doesn't stray from Cormac McCarthy's Road For those who found the Coen Brothers' adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's No Country for Old Men too lighthearted, John Hillcoat's relentlessly faithful version of the author's post-apocalyptic Pulitzer-winning novel might hit the spot.

"When people like to label any kind of performance as over the top, I suggest that if you were to go to the Guggenheim and look at a Francis Bacon, would you call that over the top?"
