Abigail Breslin and Ryan Reynolds
Ryan Reynolds has a certain smarmy charm when called upon to play douchebag types, but sincerity is not his strong point — it turns to blandness. He’s agonizingly boring in this tepid romantic comedy by director Adam Brooks, playing an about-to-be-divorced dad whose annoying daughter (Abigail Breslin, ubiquitous since
Little Miss Sunshine
) wants to hear the “real” story of how her parents met. The romance is told in flashbacks full of jokes about the early 1990s. A guy’s cellphone is huge, he’s never heard of Nirvana — it’s hilarious stuff. Reynolds’s character has relationships with three women played by a slumming Rachel Weisz, a peppy Isla Fi
sher, and a sweet Elizabeth Banks, and his daughter has to figure out which one is her mother. You’d have to be a pretty dumb kid not to recognize your own mother, but this is a pretty dumb movie.

Kit Kittredge: An American Girl
Although her film has as much visual flair as an after-school special, director Patricia Rozema gives an appealing attention to period detail, and Breslin is sweet in her first starring role.

Does it mean anything that Jesse Eisenberg's follow-up to Adventureland is Zombieland and that it also includes a theme park?

The give-and-take among the three leads takes the cake.
Little Miss Sunshine
Like little kids spouting dirty words in certain comedies, this film from first-time directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris undermines the subversive with the self-conscious. Watch the trailer for Little Miss Sunshine (QuickTime)

Three years after 2046 , Wong Kar-wai is not in love any more — and I for one am happy for him. Perfectionism can be exhausting for all involved.

Trier captures the moment when the recklessness of youth gives way to adult responsibilities, and the way childhood friendships can fall apart when different paths are taken.
