A new book looks at the golden age of international movie marketing

One of the most striking European examples in the collection is the Czech poster for Hitchcock’s The Birds, designed by Josef Vyletal seven years after the film was released. Though not noted by Sarowitz, the bizarre image cluster in the center is lifted directly from Max Ernst’s surrealist painting The Robing of the Bride. The poster explains almost nothing about the action of the film (is that California in the background?).
