Hineini: Coming Out in a Jewish High School brings the festival closer to home, with a portrait of a pioneering teen activist at the New Jewish High School of Boston. The film examines the implications of affirming one’s gay orientation despite the Torah’s provision that “Homosexuality is an abomination before the Law.” After a trip to Israel, student Shulamit Izen decides she wants to devote her life to her religion. She enters an all-Jewish school, and eventually reveals her sexual orientation to the student body. Invoking Massachusetts law, she attempts to form a Gay-Straight Alliance despite resistance. The film takes a decided twist when four gay faculty members also come out of the closet.

“We are proud,” Welden says, “To continue the tradition of offering a high-quality film program that addresses the intersection of Jewish and LGBT life.”
