“I’m not gonna let us go down in history as the assholes who let this happen,” snaps Special Agent Tom Morgan (Billy Bob Thornton) in director D.J. Caruso’s latest. What, the pillaging of another Alfred Hitchcock classic? More than one, as it turns out. Caruso brazenly “borrowed” the plot of Rear Window in last year’s Shia LaBeouf vehicle Disturbia (its producers are being sued), but who cares? It was a huge hit, and this film’s executive producer, Steven Spielberg, likes money — so much so that he’s personally shepherding the inexplicable career of LaBeouf. Jerry Shaw (LaBeouf), joined by Rachel Holloman (Michelle Monaghan), is a Wrong Man (or maybe a Man Who Knew Too Much) who’s been “activated” into a credulity-be-damned plot involving a secret government program known as Eagle Eye that stares directly north by northwest. The trouble with Shia? He’s no Henry Fonda, Jimmy Stewart, or Cary Grant. And as for Caruso, well, Brian De Palma can rest easy. 118 minutes | Boston Common + Fenway + Harvard Square + Somerville Theatre + Chestnut Hill + Suburbs
