In this insufferably familiar tale based on a story by the bestselling Maeve Binchy, young Ellie (Hayley Atwell, Brideshead Revisited's Julia) goes to work in a failing retirement home in England and learns wisdom from an eccentric array of over-acting retirees who include the usually venerable Vanessa Redgrave as a martini-swilling ex-actress. Each time one of the old folk starts in on one of those tiresome stories of his or her youth, the sappy music swells! How did this made-for-a-bad-night-of-TV movie, tastelessly directed by Anthony Byrne, hobble into the theaters?

At some point while watching the features in the Harvard Film Archive's "Le Film Maudit" ("cursed films") series — perhaps during the "Circle of Shit" chapter in Pier Paolo Pasolini's SALÒ, OR THE 120 DAYS OF SODOM — you might ask yourself, which is more cursed, the movies or anyone unfortunate enough to be watching them?

Who is Max? Who is Dylan? The casual visitor cannot know. We know that the owners also have Scollay Square (which is not located in what used to be that square), so we have our suspicions that Max and Dylan are children or cats, or a confected evocation of the contrasting merits of ethnicity and cool.

In 1992, Nigerian juju master King Sunny Adé and his African Beats played the Park Plaza Hotel ballroom as part of the Boston Globe Jazz & Blues Festival. What I remember most vividly is the hypnotic overlap of undulating guitar lines.
