Review: Shooting Beauty

Compassionate, and without pity

Sometimes just being a gifted artist doesn't mean you're the right person to tell the story. That's the revelation Cambridge photographer Courtney Bent experiences in husband George Kachadorian's documentary about life with severe handicaps.

Bent decided to shoot the attendees of a Watertown facility for persons afflicted with cerebral palsy. She found her images shallow, clichéd, and unjust, so she gave cameras to a small group to record their life, with the goal of staging an art show.

The difficulty the subjects go through just to get a single snap is harrowing. Kachadorian captures the tragedy and ultimately the elation with compassion (though he could've gone lighter on the violins) and without pity.
