Interview: James Toback

By PETER KEOUGH  |  April 29, 2009

At a time when around half of high-school students surveyed say that Rihanna "deserved" to get beaten up by Chris Brown, how do you think Mike's denunciations of Robin Givens and Desiree Washington in this film are going to play?
It's such an incendiary subject. I was shocked, by the way, at that statistic. I mean, it's one of the rare cases where what I would have predicted was so far off from what happened that it makes me feel completely out of it. Once you get into subjects where people's deepest personal responses to their own lives are involved, it's very hard to get any kind of sense of rationality, because who knows how close people are to doing things like that themselves, or are afraid of it happening or suspicious that someone's about to do it?

What do you foresee for Mike?
Mike, I think, has got a video game of some kind with Muhammad Ali that I'm sure people will get interested in. Eventually, I think he should work with kids who have backgrounds similar to his, because he'd be great with them. They'd look up to him.

No director pulls off the bait-and-switch as craftily as Jason Reitman. He gets you thinking that you're watching a hip, caustic comedy subverting the status quo, but by the end, he's vindicated all the platitudes he seemed to scorn.

John F. Kennedy wasn't the only political leader murdered in 1963. On May 22 of that year, Gregoris Lambrakis, a left-leaning, pacifist member of the Greek parliament and an aspiring presidential candidate seeking to replace the reigning right-wing government, was assaulted after a peace rally in Thessaloniki. He died five days later.

When the once-æthereal muse of the late Derek Jarman wiped sweat from her armpits in Michael Clayton , a new persona was born.

In lieu of Steve Carell’s hopelessly inept and earnest manager, we have his creepier duplicate, Glenn. Instead of the boorish brown-noser played by Rainn Wilson, there’s the more obnoxious Rick.
