Review: A Perfect Getaway

Well-crafted, entertaining pulp

David Twohy's film may be pulp, but it's well-crafted, entertaining pulp. The "killer on the loose" premise usually augurs a bloodbath for the virile and the nubile. Twohy (Below and Pitch Black), however, keeps the proceedings at a slow simmer, pacing the movie like an Agatha Christie thriller right up to the kinetic ending. Cliff (Steve Zahn) and Cydney (Milla Jovovich) are newlyweds spending their honeymoon hiking a wilderness trail on the island of Kauai. They meet another couple, Nick (Timothy Olyphant) and Gina (Kiele Sanchez, who's able to provide an entire backstory in the span of two words). But as news trickles in about a recent murder on Oahu, the couples grow wary of their surroundings and of each other. The four leads create a good chemistry, and Olyphant is terrific as an unaccountably giddy ex-GI — he creates tension even while standing still, like a compressed spring ready to uncoil.
