The Honorable Harry J Elam Sr.

Guru is born on July 17, 1962, in Roxbury, to librarian Barbara Elam and the Honorable Harry J. Elam Sr. (pictured above), who was the first African-American judge ever appointed to the Boston municipal court. Though they would eventually come to accept their son's career choice, at first they do not approve of Guru's avoiding a conventional path.
