Three distinctly varied shows kick off the weekend on FRIDAY (the 20th), starting with Celtic-folk fusion ensemble THE GNOMES at the North Kingstown Library at 6 pm, part of their free outdoor summer concert series. Then hit Matunuck for reggae-ska crew THE AGENTS (15 years strong) returning to the Ocean Mist (401.782.3740), or get to Firehouse 13 and welcome home PVD politico-punks PRAYERS FOR ATHEISTS, fresh off yet another nationwide tour. Metalhead locals MAST and South County's TO THE DEPTHS open, call 401.270.1801. Whatcha doin' SATURDAY (the 21st) around 9 pm? Head to Rosie's on Airport Road in Warwick (Sha-Na-Na's, anyone?) and catch a rare appearance by THE SCHEMERS, as frontman Mark Cutler notes this is their only club show scheduled in '10 and their first in more than a year. We anticipate a packed house, call 401.921.2242 for more. Kick back with R&B collective FELIX BROWN doing their thing on TUESDAY (the 24th) at the Newport Blues Cafe ($7, call 401.841.5510), and the SUPERCHIEF TRIO (a shout to Keith Munslow, fabulous emcee of last weekend's Foo Fest bash) continue their weekly residency at Nick-a-Nee's (401.861.7290) in the Jewelry District, 21+ and no cover.
Veteran punk-ska showmen SENIOR DISCOUNT are taking it to the big screen, presenting a special screening of their full-length film VBW Attack: The Senior Discount Movie, next THURSDAY (the 26th) at 7:15 pm at the Providence Place Cinemas 16 ($10), preceded by a free acoustic show in Hot Topic. S*D frontman Chuck Staton reports that "the anniversary cut" will feature all-new live and rare footage.
"It's really difficult for bands that are tethered to one area to continually surprise people, so this should be a really fun and unique event," said Staton. Hit up SeniorDiscountMusic.com for advance tickets.
