Mars remembers seeing a sign at Berlin’s Neue Nationalgalerie that read, “All Art Has Been Contemporary.” He takes this to mean that an artist “should always be in a dangerous position, pushing limits.” But Phoenix know their limits and navigate them well. Despite the air of nonchalance they project throughout It’s Never Been Like That, it rings with the familiar impeccable arrangements. Mars and his mates are already, I imagine, working out a new plan for their next release; it will very likely sound just like a Phoenix album.
