Meta P. has a simpler plan

By CHRIS CONTI  |  January 26, 2011

Meta P and his team adhere to the original formula throughout Off the Rock, opening with Christopher Walken's simmering speech from Poolhall Junkies regarding the lion's necessity to show the jackals who's boss, and Meta P runs with it. "We got it locked like Connecticut traffic," he declares on "I Love" over the Joan Jett loop, and boasts an endless supply of verses: "Wanna play? I got more 16s than Sega Genesis." "My Moon," "Ugly," and Venus Fly Trap" address the ladies, while "Innovative" and the clever "Heart Attack" ("The best part? I rip the ribs just to get to the heart") boom heavily with Michael Myers-style piano. End-of-album remixes "Each Day" (sampling "Baba O'Riley") and a reggae-laced redux of the title track are unnecessary add-ons. Remedy's cuts bolster the title track, and Meta P lets his childhood pal cut loose on "Scratch Every Day." Rhody rhymer Big Rush shines on "Special Features" and local wordsmith Charles Exsavior chimes in on "Crazy Times," where Meta P signs off nicely: "Hasta luego — fuck the Internet buzz/Rest in peace Auto-Tune and Internet thugs."
