Notes on the next club night from the people who brought you Blackout Bar
By SARAH TOMLINSON  |  May 9, 2006

If all goes as planned, the final installment of BLACKOUT BAR, the weekly destination for fans of punk and hard-rock DJs and bands, will be held tomorrow night (May 10) at Great Scott, with performances by the EXPLOSION and MURDER MILE (former members of Lost City Angels, Damn Personals, and Crash and Burn). The decision to end the night’s four-year run was made by founder/DJ MARK VIEIRA, who took over when the night’s other founder, Explosion bassist Damian Genuardi, moved to New York City. “We’ve done it at three different venues, had lots of ups and downs, and I really don’t think it can get any better than it already was,” he says. Over the years, guests included the BURNING BRIDES, DEAD MEADOW, the ZUTONS, and locals from CRASH AND BURN to CAVE IN and the DAMN PERSONALS. Many of the local bands who once packed the night have since broken up, moved away, or gone on perma-tour, Vieira adds. He and DJ Boo Boo Danger begin a new night, “THE SHAKEDOWN,” this Saturday at the Reel Bar in Allston, and he says it will have the same vibe as the early days of Blackout Bar, a “chill-out/hang kind of scenario,” where he’ll spin a similar mix of punk, rock, and metal. Vieira plans to move West come fall, but in the meantime he’s booked shows including Drag the River at Great Scott on May 18. . . . Atmospheric art-rockers HENRY celebrate their new self-released seven-song EP Up a Rope Saturday at the Linwood; the show, which is doubling as a birthday party for local promoter HONAH LEE MILNE, also features sets by BLANKETEER, STU WALKER, and recent Rumble winners the CAMPAIGN FOR REAL TIME.
