• We last heard from ALL THE REAL GIRLS last summer, when they shot the EP Tinsel Town on location of the set of the film Lost On Purpose. Before that, they'd basically split up. Boys with the perpetual blues will rejoice to learn that they're back for good: a new self-titled record of their wistful, Middle American heartsick ballads surfaced last month, the renewed efforts of songwriter/bandleader Peter Donovan and a whole new cadre of Portland musicians (Elijah Ocean, Zach Jones, really, you name 'em). Deep down the alley of fans of Tim Kasher's projects (Cursive, the Good Life), the 10-song offering gets real lush and rollicking, typical of the work of Jon Nolan. We'll try to get a full review of this one — which'll probably make more than one rock fan's year-end Best list — in the coming weeks. For now, visit alltherealgirls.bandcamp.com.• Heard the word that the debut record from ANNA AND THE DIGGS, the new project of former Gypsy Tailwind frontlady Anna Lombard, is getting spitshined in some notable parts of the country. Titled Head Full of Bells, the record is being mixed in LA and mastered in Nashville. That means it's almost done, which should finally stoke the legions of Tailwind fans who've gone hungry the last couple years. • Another record we can't help but dig is the latest from IDM composer ARTIE APPLESEED, whose Unstoppable Death Machine is a beast of the rarest breed around these parts. You may be familiar with the post-dub noise bro and Tea First Records proprietor from folk duo Selbyville (on hiatus) and from his work as DJ pEACEFANg, but the Unstoppable Death Machine carves out plenty new territory. Witness the Carpark electronica of "Sticky's Dub", the peaking tone collage of "Blue (6) Skull (15)", and "Unstoppable Death Machine (1)", a slice of ecstasy-drenched minimalist techno à la Pantha du Prince. AA played a crucial set in the SPACE Gallery Annex recently — loud and visually provocative — which we hope paves the way for more shows of a similarly noisy vintage this summer.
