The Merrimack Valley’s SHIPWRECK are the latest hardcore band to sign with Deathwish, Inc., the label owned by members of CONVERGE. A limited-edition seven-inch due this summer will feature two new songs and a re-recorded track from the band’s 2005 homonymous debut EP (preview at www.myspace.com/shipwreckmv). The material was recorded at Gateway Group in Wakefield with Piecemeal guitarist Jay Maas (Hammer Brothers, Learn). Of the new songs, singer JD describes “Mirage” as fast and heavy, in the vein of the Cleveland/NY sound, and “Drifting” as more influenced by Neurosis. “It’s basically about the struggle in my mind to motivate myself to do things like work and go to college when all of my friends are out on tour and seeing the world.” The group hope to record an album with Kurt Ballou at God City this fall. They’ll play June 30 at the Tiger’s Den in Brockton as part of a tour with Palehorse and Bitter End. . . . Indie-rock trio KETMAN will wrap up a 12-date California tour in time to celebrate their new self-recorded six-song EP, Esperanto, with a show at Great Scott on June 15. Recorded in mid May on a four-track at the band’s Allston home, which also houses singer/guitarist Eric Penna’s Lifted and Gifted studio, the release is being mastered by Nick Zampiello at New Alliance East. (Visit ThePhoenix.com/onthedownload for an exclusive download of “Hide Out from the Sun.”) The new material’s sound was very much influenced by their recording approach. “Things sort of distort and sound saturated, almost falling apart,” says Penna. “We liked the sound, so we wrote some tunes that fit the sound.” During a July Tuesdays residency at the Abbey Lounge, they’ll play with members of their guest bands, including Roh Delikat on July 11, Age Rings, the Beat Awfuls, and Carter Tanton on July 18, and Hallelujah the Hills and Reports on July 25.On the Web
