Rolling into Rocktember

HEADING TO THE BUCKET The Sugar Honey Iced Tea.

For those about to rawk, prepare for the return of Rocktucket, arriving in the heart of Pawtucket on Saturday, September 15 as part of the 14th annual Pawtucket Arts Festival. The block party will take over "downtown" Main Street with a stellar lineup sure to get Le Bucket buzzing all day and night. And while that stretch of Main Street resembles a backlot façade taken from Universal Studios, the 2012 Rocktucket roster is the real deal, and arguably the best yet.

Official party ushers WHAT CHEER? BRIGADE will be on hand, as well as balls-out rock duo PARTY PIGS, Newport trio THE THROTTLES, and Pittsburgh's MICROWAVES, billed as "A gnarly glimpse into the future of robot dirt!" RI hardcore heroes VERSE rage on, continuing a triumphant return behind summer 2012's Bitter Clarity, Uncommon Grace. Expect a rabid, well-deserved reception for these five dudes.

A large portion of Rocktucket 2012 is about the ladies — namely badass, female-driven acts ready to pounce. Variety abounds, ranging from THE SUGAR HONEY ICED TEA to GERTRUDE ATHERTON. Rosalind Raskin and her mates, THE RICE CAKES, continue to build momentum behind a big victory at the 2012 WBRU Rock Hunt (as well as nonstop DIY touring). I'm amped to catch another set from Gertrude Atherton (fans of Sleater-Kinney, look up Gertrude ASAP); the trio killed at a recent AS220 show opening for LOLITA BLACK. Speaking of Lolita, Bob Otis & Co. will make its Rocktucket debut this year. Lord knows I'm not shy when it comes to my opinion on this band, and I stick by my claim that LB should and could blow up in a big way following the recent release of Flesh, Blood, and Bone ($10 at lolitablack.bandcamp.com). Expect the new cut "Serpentine" in the mix, too.

"I have attended in the past and always had a good time," Otis said. "And this year's lineup is one of the best yet. My old friends Reba Mitchell (Whore Paint) and Eric Paul (Doomsday Student) are actively involved with Rocktucket, so you know it's gonna be good.

"I think it's a great way for people to know that Providence isn't the only town where great music and art is happening," said Otis.

The suggested donation is $5 at the gate. Five bucks for this lineup — are you kidding? There will be plenty of good grog on-hand for purchase, including Newport Storm, Grey Sail, and Sean Larkin's revered Revival line, as well as eats from Poco Loco Tacos, Like No Udder, and more. See you there!

The new EP by PVD trio Gertrude Atherton, Isle of Lost Skulls , is a gnarled beauty of a debut and proves to be well worth the wait. I have been eagerly anticipating this record since catching drummer Melanie Fuest, singer/guitarist Shannon Le Corre, and bassist Nicole Lagace in action a dozen or so times over the past year.
