Out of Car Wrecks and Hurricanes | Self-Released

 Mieka Pauley |
For her latest release, local singer-songwriter Mieka Pauley collects five of her best songs on an EP produced by pop maestro John Alagia (Dave Matthews/Jason Mraz). Her gritty acoustics have been given an electric glow that leaves the tunes tastefully shinier without going overboard. “The Way It Is” maintains her soulful, simplistic style; self-depreciating lyrics like “I’ll pick you up/When you don’t fall/And I’ll come running/When you don’t call” are charming, not mushy. “Faster” embodies the EP’s theme — finding solace in the dark, but not necessarily the dreary. Pauley’s darkness is a peaceful solitude, which she finds in both the defiant “Stronger” and the slippery grasp of “Draped in Blue.”MIEKA PAULEY + UNCLE SHAKER + HARRIET STREET + PARKVIEW | June 17 | Paradise Lounge, 969 Comm Ave, Boston | 617.562.8804

The second album by this Norwegian singer-songwriter blands out into coffeeshop background blur a little too often to earn a place next to more dynamic records by fellow folk-pop females like Beth Orton and Feist.
- Shapeshifting
It’s a delicious surprise to find that Jose can get beyond the bedroom sound of Veneer , and by “get beyond,” I mean this guy can swing with a reckless, nerdy abandon that does nothing to rob him of his Nick Drake comparisons. Slideshow: Zero 7 at Avalon, September 12, 2006

Molina makes her home at the juicy intersection where acoustic instruments meet computerized texture.

Bordered by twilight and tangled-branch silhouettes, former Grant Lee Buffalo singer-songwriter Grant-Lee Phillips captures the imagery, as well as the heart, of an era’s underground on this aptly titled collection of covers.

The wordless, minute-long opener “Euglama,” though — that’s worth digging.
- Thumb’s up
When Tom Thumb, aka Andy Arch, last put a record out, it was a solo acoustic outing, bedroom folk music, one guitar and one voice.
- Richard Swift
This young singer-songwriter is a member of the school of West Coast pop eccentrics who count Tom Waits, Harry Nilsson, and Van Dyke Parks as professors emeritus. Richard Swift, "As I Go" (mp3)
- Mark Olson
The album shimmers with the sort of musical detail that keeps woe-is-me songwriting from sounding (entirely) like a pity party.
- The Writ stuff
Cass McCombs upends standard persona-building moves.
