One thing that I thought was really funny was, you know, you did the last album, Fatherfucker, wearing the beard on the cover and I was like, “Oh, yeah, whatever.” And it was totally commonplace to me — but it looked cool and it was funny.
And it grossed people out!
And I didn’t realize that ’cause I live in a kind of a —
’Cause in our world its normal.
I was like, “Whatever, she’s got a beard on, big deal!”
Yeah, that makes sense. That’s when I was like, “I wonder if I’m in the mainstream? Let’s try this.” Because I’m not interested in being underground, I’m interested in having that acceptance in the mainstream. Which in a way it was — because then Kate Moss turned around and went on the cover of V magazine and wore the exact same beard [sic].
Oh really? I didn’t see that. Did you feel like that was an homage?
Oh, yeah, it was. I know it was, directly. I know that she knows about me, I know that she’s a fan. I think she likes me more than cocaine
Well that’s gotta be high honor, seriously. I was wondering about living in Berlin and begin creative there and what do you do there? What's your down time like? Are you just living and creating there?
Yeah. I mean, it’s just like anywhere.
Are you holding down a day job?
No, that’s one thing I’m not doing. And that’s one thing we’re all, we look at each other everyday, especially Radio [Sloan] and all — [to someone on the fairgrounds] Oh, please! I was waiting for you! Little baby first!
Are you on the fairground right now? What's going on?
They thought I was going to run over the baby with my little banana bike, but I wasn’t going to do that. So yeah, we were just like, “Look how lucky we are, look what we get to do.” And hopefully we’re making a statement. And this is the beginning of an eight- month long tour. This isn’t your question, but I’m getting it out anyway. And I just feel really lucky that someone like Radio, you know, she's always true to her school, and JD [Samson] — they’re just so real, and they’ve wanted to be a part of what I’m doing, and that feels really good. That they understand. That, “Yeah we’re the underground, but let’s fucking go to these 20,000-seat venues and open up for Nine Inch Nails.”
And pay the bills.
No, we’re not paying bills. I lose money on these tours — I lose money on the ones that I open up for people. Its just about the whole exposure thing.
Do you end up selling CDs at least?
I’ve been selling a lot of T-shirts. But the point is that it’s an exposure thing. They need to see that. They need to see more all-girl bands, and not just all-girl bands but fucking kick-ass, creative, not-just-another-rock-band. It’s not just all-girls, even — we’re doing something different. It’s even more different with the full band. It’s great
