DOMINIC AND THE LUCID have finished tracking on the follow up to 2004’s Vinyl Human. Most of it was done in the home studio, but drums were done with JIM BEGLEY at the Studio and JACK MURRAY at Big Sound (though Murray has apparently now left Big Sound). JON WYMAN will use the Halo studios to master the disc over the first week of September. Look for a late-October release. No word on a title.
NOW IS NOW have a title for their third full-length: Never Go Back. The pop outfit headed up by songwriter Mitch Alden have scheduled an October 28 CD-release gig at Ri-Ra. Oh, and Alden would like for the “Sibilance” staff to convey his distaste for one George W. Bush. So, everyone’s in agreement, then.
Memory Lane owner JIM PAQUETTE will open his new location in the old Country Crossroads spot in Standish September 15 with Billy Joel cover band STRANGERS. Paquette hopes to also house the MAINE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME there. Discussions continue. Look for an induction ceremony for the first class in spring 2007. Nominees and inquiries can be directed toreadyyy4@yahoo.com.
SPACE Gallery was packed last week for a secret show billed as THE DAVE RAWLINGS MACHINE. Dave’s lightning-fast guitar skills were enough of a draw to fill the room, but surely every fan in the house dragged themselves out on a Monday with at least a faint hope that Rawlings’s longtime musical partner GILLIAN WELCH might stop by. The crowd roared when the two stepped up to the stage and threw down two mighty-long sets of perfectly executed but highly personal performances in the style of early country and bluegrass. Everyone, audience and performers alike, smiled ear to ear all night.
2006 BMP Best Male Vocalist DAVE GUTTER, charter member of the PARANOID SOCIAL CLUB, celebrated the birth of his first child, daughter Kani, in the early hours of August 17. LOST ON LIFTOFF frontman WALT CRAVEN was not to be outdone. His first child, son Finn, was born the morning of August 24. The “Sibilance” staff extend their sincere congratulations and wonder what the chances are of Gutter’s and Craven’s kids eventually playing in a band together.
LOVERLESS have completed work on the follow-up to last year’s grandiose self-titled debut. The dirty rockers, fronted by wildman ELIJAH OCEAN, will release Fighter September 19, with a release party on September 22 at the Big Easy. Word is, the disc was intended to just be an EP, but the songs just kept coming. The album has 10 tracks, yet clocks in under 30 minutes. That’s punk rock.
HEADSTART! now have an official release date for the much-teased Our House, a concept album of sorts. Their third full-length will drop to stores on October 17, with a CD-release show at the Big Easy October 20. Watch their MySpace page, www.myspace.com/headstart for “trailers” for the album. The disc, if you can’t guess from the trailers reference, is fashioned to work as a movie script, with the lyrics delineating any number of actor parts. The packaging will come with a “script,” complete with background and stage direction. Should any aspiring filmmaker want to take a swing at bringing the thing to the big screen, Headstart! are all in favor, but don’t currently have any plans of their own to shoot the thing.
