Defected In The House: Eivissa 06

In the House

“The Balearic Sound of Ibiza,” say the intro notes to the latest three-CD compilation from the prolific and inspired Defected production team. Devoted entirely to long-time Ibiza favorites, as selected by famed Ibiza DJ Pippi, the third CD includes “You Can Run But You Can’t Hide,” De Melero’s “1,2,3,4,” a drag-queen-ish version of James Brown’s “Sex Machine,” René et Gaston’s “Vallée de larmes,” Black Box’s 1990 hit “Fantasy,” and much more. No surprise that these hits tend to overwhelm the other two CDs, which are continuous mixes of garage, Eurohaus, and jazzy, Miguel Migs–style house, all of them very popular in Ibiza discos. Those looking for big noise, high-volume trance, and similarly maximum-intensity dance music will not find it here; the music lopes along with a moderate amount of orchestration, atmospherics, piano solos, and vocal reveries — lullaby rather than lust. Favorite tracks: Willie Bobo’s classic “Always There,” Ultra Nate’s “How Long,” Peven Everett’s cute “Just a Girl,” and three Brazilian-style numbers: Siji’s “Iranajo,” Jansa y Juju’s “Mainstreet,” and DJ Meme’s “Patolada.”
