Portland scene report: October 13, 2006

Sibilance
By SIBILANCE  |  October 11, 2006

The “Sibilance” staff got a little ahead of ourselves when we said the SCOTT LINK solo album was imminent. It’s done all right, but Link reports that he’s got somebody shopping it around to the labels, so you won’t get your hands on it anytime soon. Earliest opportunity would be just after the first of the year, and it could be longer. That doesn’t mean you can’t get a taste of the new sound, though. Link has put a band together for a November 10 gig at Chicky’s, and you can look for GINGER COTE (Darien Brahms, Coming Grass) on drums, SCOTT CONLEY (Diesel Doug, Muddy Marsh Ramblers) on bass, JOE BOUCHER (Frotus Caper) on keys, and KEITH TASKER (Every Sunday, the Brilliant Mistakes) and (possibly) MATTHEW ROBBINS (King Memphis) on guitars. That’s a pretty powerhouse outfit, right there. The sound remains pretty Diesel Doug, with just a little less shtick.

SIDECAR RADIO are about to emerge from hibernation. After losing drummer RYAN O’CONNELL late this summer to, of all things, grad school, Sidecar put out the all-points-bulletin for a rhythm anchor and picked up one of this town’s best in JASON STEWART, formerly of TWITCHBOY and 6GIG, and currently of MATAHARI. Sidecar frontman CHRISTIAN HAYES reports that the band are already writing new material and expect to book shows soon.

Speaking of JASON STEWART, he’s one of the busier pair of hands in town. Though he’s stepped back from working with alt-metal/math rockers CONIFER and NIGEL HALL’S soul outfit, he’s taken up with TODD DADALEARES (of the much beloved early ‘90s art-rock band MRC and many others) and NEIL COLLINS (formerly of TWISTED ROOTS, LINCOLNVILLE, and ELDEMUR KRIMM, which is a damn fine trio of former bands) to form CYCLOPS, which promises to be one smart band, whatever they sound like. Stewart reports aiming for an early 2007 first gig, but also hints at a November TWITCHBOY reunion, which will have Todd’s brother BRANT DADALEARES reuniting with both TRIPE and Twitchboy in the same year. Also, MATAHARI has finished an album and has some label interest.

And speaking of drummers, JEFF GLIDDEN reports that LAZY LIGHTNING reunited for the first time in six years last weekend at Hempfest, but don’t get used to it. Currently, Glidden is in rehearsal with country gal JENNY PAQUETTE (daughter of Memory Lane owner/Maine Rock and Roll Hall of Fame advocate JIM PAQUETTE) in preparation for touring and recording.
