Portland scene report: October 20, 2006

Sibilance
By SIBILANCE  |  October 18, 2006

Holy Mainers in the mainstream media! The first should be no surprise to anyone who watches football (even when the Patriots are on a bye week): AS FAST AS’ “Florida Sunshine,” the first single from this year’s Octone Records’ debut, Open Letter to the Damned, was the music paired with the promo ad for this week’s CSI: Miami episode. This is network television, folks! They run their promos about 50 times a day and, during the football games, you’ve got to figure at least 15 million people saw those ads, even accounting for runs to the fridge for more beer. Frontman SPENCER ALBEE (whom the “Sibilance” staff called about five seconds after seeing the ad) reports that the song was used for about four seconds during an episode two weeks ago, then played for a bit longer in an episode last week, and now we’ve got it as the big promo song. “They’re really taking to it,” he says. “I think it’s because it has both ‘Florida’ and ‘kill’ in it.” The band can revel in it as they support Bowling for Soup with a one-off show in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and then head home for this Sunday’s show at the Big Easy.

Readers of Rolling Stone won’t be surprised by this next item: RAY LAMONTAGNE was featured in a full-page article and sidebar in the issue of October 10. Holy Smokes! A full page in Rolling Stone! It ain’t the cover, but it ain’t bad either. Sad news is that the author of the piece correctly interpreted the song “Lesson Learned” off Till the Sun Turns Black as an apology for infidelity and asked LaMontagne about it. Turns out he’s separated from his wife and is now living alone up in Wilton. Too bad. The “Sibilance” staff knows well how devoted he was to his family, and the touring seems to have really screwed things up.

DOMINIC AND THE LUCID have announced a title for their upcoming sophomore effort, Waging the Wage, and it will be released October 31. Listen for interviews on WCLZ this Sunday, on CHARLIE GAYLORD’S “Greetings” show at 11 am, and on WCYY November 2, at 7 pm, with MARK CURDO. CD-release show is November 3 at the Big Easy.

Also having a CD-release show in November is MEANTONE, who has been getting good face-time in this paper lately. The show is November 17 at Geno’s.

MOE., who retain a Maine connection, are now in their fifteenth year and are working on a new album called The Conch, to be released in January.

SLOWING ROOM, as of their October 20 show at the White Heart, will be making their best-of CD, Sequences, Martinis, and Hangovers and the EP Houseplants, available as single-song downloads atwww.brickcitymedia.com.
