Portland scene report: February 2, 2007

Sibilance starts now
By PORTLAND PHOENIX MUSIC STAFF  |  January 31, 2007

SARA COX is near to setting a date for the release of her much-anticipated follow-up to 2003’s Arrive. You’re going to have to wait just a little longer. She says At Home with Home is coming in April, with 10 new songs and lots of special guests.

Looks like the kids actually are alright. For vacation week, the PORTLAND CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC puts on a Rock Camp, headed by JEFF SHAW, where teenagers can attend and “learn how to jam in a garage band.” Hey, can we come, too? This will be the camp’s fifth get-together, and maybe you’ve actually heard WCYY’s contest that will result in one lucky kid getting a free pass, so it’s no wonder SPARKS THE RESCUE will be swinging by to give the campers some pointers.

A report from MEANTONE , who travels through New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut this month: at Geno’s, on January 20, his special guests, DAMSELS BURLESQUE, “took their clothes off fast while acting out a bondage scene with comic Dustin, and he then got his ass kicked. Then they did ‘sweet-n-low,’ in which the ladies made cupcakes and took their clothes off again while feeding cupcakes to the audience and yours truly.” Mmmm, we love cupcakes.

EMILIA DAHLIN checked in this week, as well, with news of an upcoming review for God Machine as a Top 12 DIY CD in the 100th issue of Performing Songwriter, which streets in March. Not too shabby. A track from the album, “Loneliness Is . . .,” has also made it to the next round of judging in the jazz category of the 2006 INTERNATIONALSONGWRITING COMPETITION, judged by the likes of Tom Waits and Brian Wilson, both among our heroes.
