Inside the L.A.B.

By DAVID DAY  |  February 27, 2007

DJ DAN ALCALA — one of Circuits’ favorite local DJs — has a new mix on-line with a promising track list. The almost entirely Euro-centric 80-minute jam includes producers like Ripperton, Minilogue, Joakim, and Stephen Bodzin. “I wanted to do a mix that went back to the roots of the music I really love,” Dan writes via e-mail. “For a while last year I was caught up in the funk party electro-house music that everyone seems to be playing these days. That’s not me, though, and I think that music can be pretty one-dimensional. I’ve always loved songs that are dark but still quite melodic.”

The real gem of the 13-track mix is an extraordinary remix of German socialist LAWRENCE, who is among Circuits’ top five producers in the world. (“I’m not sure why so much of the mix is German!” Alcala admits.) Better still, the remix of “Along the Wire” is from Superpitcher, the lush-life luminary from the über-chic Kompakt label. Riding a chiming, luminous melody, SUPERPITCHER adds even more synth waves and gloss, until the track envelops your ears like a sonic comforter, a timely blend for the winter. The mix is available as a free download here. Alcala’s next gig is March 25 at Aria. Mark your calendar.
