The newest buzz is about his remix of a Junior Boys track, and upcoming for the techno king are tracks for Siobhan Donaghy, Detroit homeboy Kevin Saunderson, and African percussion master Tony Allen. “We’re working on that now,” he says, apparently to someone in the Planet E offices. “I still have to do a Tiefschwarz mix I promised them.” He laughs. Planet E is almost strictly about vinyl, a format he still loves. “Most people who DJ are still interested in finding stuff you can’t find on Beatport or iTunes. You know, maybe there’s only 500 pressings and you still have to go to a record store. You still have to listen to miles of records. As far as a consumer product, vinyl’s still the best that’s out there for music. Period. Digital’s great cause I can sit in a hotel room in China and download music I can play that night. As a label owner, I can appreciate both sides.”
Always on top of the latest trends, he talks at length about the newest crossover of rap into dance music. “It shows that those guys were either influenced by or paid attention to it [club music]. Missy and the Cybrotronic sample, Timbaland and drum ’n’ bass, T.I. has that track with the ‘Gypsy Woman’ riff in it. It’s crossing over again. Hip-hop should always keep its mind open.” And what does a visionary see for the future? “We’ll see what happens over the next years. . . . Are we still going to have people that are interested in touching media? Or are we just going to be downloading information?” He mentions “implants, microchips, and all that shit” before concluding, “Demon Days, man, that’s how it goes.”
