Notes on the Boston Modern Orchestra Project and Haunt

A few promises from GIL ROSE, conductor/founder of BOSTON MODERN ORCHESTRA PROJECT, about its Sanders Theatre concert on May 19: “You’ll have to bring a big shoehorn to fit everybody on stage, and we’ll have every damn piece of percussion ever invented. There will be a shameless groove at the end. And it will be freaking loud.” BMOP is America’s only orchestra dedicated to performing, commissioning, recording, and performing work by 20th and 21st-century composers, and for its 10th-anniversary finale it’s pulling out all the stops. The program focuses on American composers inspired by rock: clarinettist Evan Ziporyn’s Hard Drive, Steven Mackey’s Dreamhouse, and Anthony DeRitis’s Devolution: A Concerto for DJ and Orchestra featuring DJ Spooky. “We’re doing a concert that takes this downtown æsthetic,” says Rose, “and putting it on a larger platform. There’s certainly a stream of ‘classical’ or composed music with this rock æsthetic – it’s a fairly strong subset.” The show will feature the guitar quartet Catch, Synergy Vocals, and actor/playwright Rinde Eckert. Ziporyn is basing his work on the sounds from a computer’s hard drive. DJ Spooky, says Rose, “is doing an ‘improvised solo for deconstructed orchestra’ motif.”What’s the best way to break a song? TV. Northampton-based Matt Hebert, recording under the name HAUNT, has “Love Song” airing on How I Met Your Mother on May 7. Hebert, the former frontman of Ware River Club, also placed “Run, Run, Run” in the indie film Anderson’s Cross, which is touring the festival circuit. . . . Thirteen bands — from Klaxons to the Rapture — are playing Urban Outfitters locations throughout the country this spring, with gigs sponsored by local non-commercial radio stations.
