Lil Wayne’s world

By RICHARD BECK  |  May 21, 2007

That last line doesn’t make sense at first, but remember the chorus to “When Doves Cry”? Wayne’s free-associative brilliance is a rare thing — here it’s worthy of Shakespeare’s Mercutio. The long delays plaguing Tha Carter III are troubling. But until it arrives, we’ve got the mixtapes, where Wayne really feels at home.

Lil Wayne’s world
Who the hell is Dick Beck and who says he knows hip hop? I've always liked the hip hop coverage in The Phoenix from Alex Papadomous to Steve Perez to Nick Sylvester...all quality writers. But this dude is clueless. "And remember, this is a freestyle." Not an "off the dome" freestyle, you moron. All he did was re write Jay Z's rhyme. yay. Not a freestyle. Through the first two paragraphs he's pointed out that Lil Wayne has jacked two Jay Z beats yet he calls him "the most playful, experimental artist in mainstream hip-hop". Son are you kidding me? How long have you been listening to rap? You might think it's a matter of taste til we learn that this writer doesn't know his shit: "It’s when he raps over new beats that you get the full effect of Wayne’s thrilling weirdness. The beat to “Sports Center” is built on the soundtrack from a tennis match, complete with the thwack of serves and the high-pitched grunts of the players." Oops, sorry son, that's ANOTHER Jay Z beat. So far the most experimental dude in hip hop has re worked THREE Jay Z songs on the same non album, mix tape bullshit. BRILLIANT! Then dude thinks he has to decipher a simple reference: “I’m a prince, too demanding, just like my mom.” That last line doesn't’t make sense at first, but remember the chorus to “When Doves Cry”? Yes, asshole, we remember. That song was kind of a hit, thanks. The line makes sense from jumpstreet. Please find a better , more knowledgeable writer. This article is embarrassing.

"Listen, I will go on record saying I love Feist, I love Neko Case. I love that music. But that shit's easy listening for the twentysomethings. It fucking is. It's not hard to listen to any of that stuff."

LA hip-hop has two threads, and DJ Quik pulls both of them. The first is g-funk, a production style that relies on deep, open grooves and an endless parade of funk samples.
  •   FLIPPER | LOVE  |  May 26, 2009
Flipper formed in San Francisco in 1979, and they're remembered three decades later because of a song called "Sex Bomb" that's one of the funniest pieces of music I've ever heard.

There were not one but two clarinets on stage at the Somerville Theatre on Tuesday night, and that gives you some idea of how intricate Annie Clark's chamber-pop compositions can be.

It's become a commonplace to say that "indie" is too vague to mean anything useful, but that's not actually true.
