Best, perhaps, to see the Jandek phenomenon as a tender act of collusion between artist and audience, in which the unsettling intimacy of his music is protected and preserved by a whispering ring of loyalty, forgiveness, and fascination. We do live in weird times: privacy itself has become arcane. And Jandek, in the richness of his anonymity, speaks to this. It’s hard to believe he doesn’t know what he’s doing. “It all adds up to something so unique,” says Keszler, “And it works so well with the music. . . . I’ve no idea how he crafted it, or if it’s real or what. I guess I’ll find out.”
