Portland scene report: June 1, 2007

Sibilance starts now
By PORTLAND PHOENIX MUSIC STAFF  |  May 30, 2007

First, just an acknowledgement that the “Sibilance” staff understands TWISTED ROOTS have a new album out, 12 Skies Fire & the Black, and that it was released May 19 at the Big Easy. We know. The album will be reviewed. Stop e-mailing us.

The TOUGHCATS are holding a MUSIC-VIDEO CONTEST in which fans (or non-fan filmmakers; we're not sure the band care) make their own videos for either "Thunderbird" or "043," downloadable from www.MySpace.com/toughcats. Submit the finished videos to SPACE Gallery by June 15, and check out the best entries at the SPACE benefit June 16.

Speaking of SPACE GALLERY, PASTE MAGAZINE's latest issue names it one of the top 40 music venues in the country. Too bad they got the address wrong. It's 538 Congress Street, lads.

This note came into the “Sibilance” office recently: “L-7, a newly formed rock band at Hall Elementary School, will give its first concert on Tuesday, May 29, at 7 pm, blah, blah.” Okay, we’re totally big supporters of kids getting into rock and roll and playing “selections by the Beatles, Domingo Samudio, and Judas Priest,” but couldn’t somebody have given the kiddos a heads up that L7 is kind of taken as a band name, by the rockin’ gals that are Donita Sparks, Suzi Gardner, Jennifer Finch, and Demetra Plakas? Christ, Bricks Are Heavy was produced by Butch Vig and was one of the defining discs of the Seattle grunge scene. What the hell are they teaching over there at Hall Elementary?

Speaking of kids, there’s a new MAINE KIDS MUSIC ASSOCIATION, formed to get low-income kids into music. Check out www.myspace.com/mainekidsmusic or go to the Gold Room for a benefit comedy show June 22. Tix are $10.
