Portland scene report: June 8, 2007

Sibilance starts now
By PORTLAND PHOENIX MUSIC STAFF  |  June 6, 2007

JASON SPOONER’s new disc, Flame You Follow, officially dropped to record stores June 1, but he and the band just left for a tour to Texas and back, so gigs June 29 and 30 at the Wine Bar and Amigo’s, respectively, will serve as CD-release shows. Amigo’s, Spooner informs the “Sibilance” staff, will be more rowdy than the Wine Bar affair. No shit.

MEANTONE report they’ve finished recording an EP with DR. AUDIO at TUNETOWN STUDIOS in Wells. Doc is a gal, and she’s worth the trip to Wells, Meantone report. Look for a late-summer, early-fall release.

Sorry that we’re just getting around now to saying congratulations to the PROJECT, but we’ll take the chance now to acknowledge their victory in the REINDEER ROCKOFF recently. We’d guess there are roughly 20 bands across the country named the Project (we found one Dallas and one in Detroit as the first two results on Google), but we won’t hold that against them. Check Portland’s Project out June 23 as part of the ROCK CAMP BENEFIT at the Station with the KILLING MOON, HEADSTART!, CERULEAN, and ALIAS GRACE.

Drummer STEVE GROVER has released a new collection of jazz composition, with help from sax-player DAVID WELLS, trombonist TIM SESSIONS, guitarist TONY GABOURY, and bassists CHRIS VAN VOORST VAN BEEST. It’s called Between Now and After, has seven tracks, and is Grover’s first release of his compositions since Breathe in 2003.

We’re just giving you a heads up that DARIEN BRAHMS will be playing the PRIDE PARTY at the White Heart June 15. Brahms is a legend in this one-horse town and doesn’t play out often, so make sure you check her out. Word is she’s about 80 percent done with a new record she’s recording all at her own house, so you’ll likely hear new tunes.

Remember that new project formed by NICK GOODALE (Jeremiah Freed) and MATT SHARDLOW (Zion Train)? Looks like they’re calling it HONEY BALLSACK.

Longtime LA sound engineer MICHAEL MCNERNEY has moved to Kennebunkport and is opening a recording studio called PORTMEDIA. Check out www.port-media.com.
